It was the morning of June 14, 2020. The news broke. Sushant Singh Rajput was no more. He was found in his Bandra residence. His death was initially considered a case of suicide. The Maharashtra Police initiated an investigation. The postmortem report established death by asphyxia — absence of oxygen due to hanging.

Nevertheless, there were doubts. Nobody was willing to believe that so gifted, dynamic an actor would commit suicide.

Spotlight on Rhea Chakraborty

Sushant’s then-girlfriend, actress Rhea Chakraborty, found herself in the limelight. In days, fingers were pointed at her. On July 27, 2020, a complaint against her was lodged by Sushant’s family in Patna. They charged her with abetment of suicide and fraud with money — namely, siphoning off Rs 15 crore from Sushant’s accounts.

This complaint brought the case into national headlines. It was no longer a private tragedy — it became a public storm.

Transfer to the CBI

Transfer to the CBI

With mounting public pressure, and the family’s allegations, the Supreme Court intervened. The case was transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation. This was followed by years of interrogation, media trials, internet debates, and fiery discussions.

Rhea was questioned several times. Her family members also came under severe scrutiny. Meanwhile, social media platforms were flooded with endless speculations. Some thought there was foul play involved. Others believed the truth was already out.

Rhea’s Lawyer Speaks Out

On March 24, 2025, Rhea Chakraborty’s lawyer Satish Maneshinde finally broke his silence once again. He categorically asserted, “Sushant Singh Rajput’s death was a pure case of suicide.

He reminded everyone that Rhea had gone out of Sushant’s house on June 8, 2020 — six days prior to his death. In his view, the two had been arguing about his drug consumption and his mental health drugs. Following a quarrel, Sushant instructed Rhea’s brother to take her away. They never had any contact after that day.

What the Police Found?

What the Police Found?

Sushant was not alone when he died. He was staying with 2-3 house staff and flatmates. All were questioned by the police. As per the Bandra Zone Deputy Commissioner of Police, Rhea was not directly involved in the case. She had given her statements early on in the investigation.

Even so, Sushant’s family and the public weren’t content. The narrative kept on shifting in the media. Guesswork persisted. Social media got filled with theories and hashtags.

The Financial Accusations

Maybe the gravest accusation made against Rhea was that she stole money from Sushant. His family alleged Rs 15 crore were spent in vain. However, to this date, no concrete evidence has come out in public to substantiate this. The CBI also probed into the issue rigorously.

Maneshinde stated, “CBI has interrogated Rhea Chakraborty and her family many times. Still, they found no link to the death. I’ve said it from the beginning — Rhea had nothing to do with this.”

Closure Report Filed

Closure Report Filed

After almost five years of thorough investigation, the CBI filed its closure report in a court in Mumbai. According to sources, the agency did not find any evidence of murder. The conclusion was in line with the initial postmortem — suicide by asphyxia.

This report could put an end to the legal investigation, but it could not possibly silence public opinion.

Media Trials and Public Opinion

One of the special features of this case was the media. News channels to YouTube personalities, everyone had an opinion. Rhea was demonized. Abuse and hate messages on social media trailed her everywhere.

Most now look back and wonder — was it justified? Was it right to judge before the investigation was over?

The Mental Health Conversation

Sushant’s case also led to talk about mental health in the industry. He is said to have been depressed. Bipolar disorder was mentioned by those close to him. Others spoke of pressure, loneliness, and professional woes.

All too often, mental health remains a forbidden subject in India. This tragedy revealed the devastating power of silence.

Final Words

Sushant Singh Rajput was more than an actor. He was a dreamer. A thinker. An inspiration to many who had big dreams coming from small towns.

His demise created a void in the hearts of millions. Although the CBI closure report terms it a suicide, the emotional scars fresh in the minds and hearts of fans and loved ones alike.

As the case officially closes, we are left with a decision. Do we continue to pursue shadows? Or do we seize this opportunity to discuss mental illness, media ethics, and empathy?
